Treating your dog every now and then with “people food” can really spice up your pooch’s life and some food even have healthy benefits.
Do note that certain foods are not suitable for all dogs, so it is always good to check with your vet.
The following meals and snacks work well as occasional treats, so make a date with your dog and enjoy some quality time together.
Eggs are a great source of protein for dogs, while spinach gives them fibre, which regulates weight, and vitamins A and K help keep the skin and coat healthy. Stick to only one egg for your dog.
Salmon and Green Beans
Salmon is a good source of omega 3s and fish oil which keep your dog’s coat shiny and it is also good for its joints. It is important to cook the salmon well. Green beans are low in calories and high in fibre, which makes dogs feel full without them gaining weight.
Apples and Peanut Butter
This is a great snack to fill that afternoon hungry spot. Apples contain pectin, which is good for digestion. It is important to take out the core, as the seeds can be toxic. One to two teaspoons of peanut butter contains healthy fats, protein and vitamins.
Steak and Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Lean red meat is a great source of amino acid which help build muscle and B vitamins that is good for a dog’s metabolism. Any fat should be trimmed off and the meat must be baked or boiled. Sweet potatoes are high in fibre, vitamin C and beta carotene.
This is a refreshing way for your pooch to rehydrate, especially on hot summer days. Fruit should only be served occasionally as it is high in sugar.
